Our Client

Method is a forward-thinking product company known for its eco-friendly cleaning & body care solutions.

They came to Instrument because they needed an out-of-the-box solution to revamp their mobile website.

Their goals:

💡 Increase foot traffic on their site by interweaving more opportunities for leveraging data to build dynamic personalized content

💡 Creating community by highlighting Method's social & environmental initiatives

💡 Increase engagement on their website

Overview

This project was broken out into several sprints over the course of a month and some change.

I joined the project 3 weeks in and was tasked to strategize and translate stakeholder needs into low-fidelity prototypes for our UX/UI designers.

Strategy Phase

Prior to joining the project, during a stakeholder meeting, the Method team landed the concept of "dissolving barriers." since that’s what they aim to do as a brand.

They wanted the focus on making it easy for consumers to make an impact and a frictionless shopping experience.

In response to the feedback our team came up with the idea of a Bundle Builder to
satisfy our users' & clients' needs for a personalized shopping experience.

Research

By doing a detailed competitive analysis I was able to pinpoint how we might….

Build a best-in-class “bundle kit”

How can we facilitate shopping across different product categories, such as personal care, cleaning, home, etc.?

Highlight the social & environmental impact Method has on the world.

Satisfying Solutions
Through…

Prototyping + Testing
+ Feedback

As a designer, I like to use a trifecta of prototyping, testing, and receiving feedback in the same time. I find it's easier to test while I'm iterating.

In the case of this project user testing was out of scope so we mostly focused on creating thought starters for Method to validate after the project. But to make sure we were on the right track we maintained open communication with the Method team.

Challenges

Here's what we know…people enjoy Method's products and frequently shop where their merchandise is sold.

"65% of our traffic is on mobile and we need to ensure we’re developing a flawless mobile experience." -Method Team

Why Bundle?

Consumer patterns show that people frequently buy products together Ex. Shampoo + Conditioner, Body Wash + Lotion.

Method has preexisting products that would be better together.
Ex. Method Refills

Show Em What You Got

Method struggles to use their online presence to their advantage. They have many new products and social initiatives but users rarely know about them.

Who knew they had stain remover?

Understanding the Assignment

Through conducting stakeholder interviews and user research we discovered that the modern-day consumer craved personalization, conveniences, and an online end-to-end shopping experience. Looking at 10+ brands I was able to FigJam my ideas out, define what makes a good bundle builder, and how Method can leverage its products to increase engagement.

What makes a bundle a bundle? Any trends?

Option 1: Sets of 2

Often called a "Set"… is commonly seen with Shampoo + Conditioner Hand Lotion + Hand soap. These sets are paired based on logical products that should go together.

What do people like?

Maximum customization

Buying products in bulk i.e.. Costco moms

Deals, DEALS, DEAL$$$
Bundled products are often sold at a discount and can serve as a potential motivator to buy items.

UI Design & Layout Exploration

Using prefabricated assets made by the design team (credit to Alexa, Keyoni 💛) I was able to move and play with the layout. These screens were then used to articulate to our stakeholders the potential benefits they could have with a bundle builder experience.

Research Put Into Action

Bundle Builder Cart

Visible call to action to add products to bundle together.

Change Makers Club

To showcase Method's social impacts we added a points system to gamify users' shopping exspirence.

Swipe Left or Right 😉

Our client repeatedly emphasized needing our deliverables and copy to feel more "Methody."

We tested a variety of access points to make a bundle builder better. We narrowed it down to the "Tinder Swipe" interaction. This iteration made for the most interactive, fun and engaging way to enter the bundle builder experience.

What's your Method? Which sent is your go to?

Community Polls

Crowd-sourced interactive polls to add a sense of community + play + surprise + delight. They also help users purchase new products that will fit their lifestyle.

Research shows that people tend to purchase things that have higher peer reviews. Products with higher votes reinforce crowd mentality and make items seem more reliable and desirable.

Feedback

The client liked the idea of personalization, dissolving any barriers when shopping. It would help the consumer with knowing the right amount to order, recommending refills, scents, etc.

Solution: Smart Data

Hearing our client's feedback we strategically added touchpoints that mimic the user's buying habits. Using the consumer's data we can track their shopping habits to up sale products. This technique is beneficial for both the company and users who crave an efficient, effortless shopping experience.
